Anna was born on a farm at the edge of Syracuse, Mo., the oldest girl of five children. She was a beautiful and very popular girl. The family attended and were all members of the Syracuse Baptist Church. Anna remained a member for her entire life and her funeral was held in that church. She was buried in the Syracuse Cemetery.
Mother married my father when she was twenty-one (21) years old. They had two girls, Sara and Susanna.
Anna remodeled and repaired many houses around Syracuse. Harry would buy a house in need of everything -- Anna painted, papered, built white picket fences and planted flowers, when she had it looking very pretty he would sell and buy another run down piece of property -- consequently we lived in many houses in the area.
Mother made all of the ball games -- Sara and I wanted to go -- Daddy would only let us go if Mother took us, so we took our friends and mother drove -- regardless of the weather.
Mother was a very good seamstress, she made all of Sara' and my clothes when we were small and most of them while we were home.
During the depression and in the 1940s after Sara and I had left home mother worked in a pants factory in Tipton, Mo (five miles away)
In 1945 Daddy took a job as guard at the State Prison in Jefferson City. Mother worked in a shoe factory for a short time and then as a clerk in clothing and dry good stores.
In 1952 when Daddy was not well they moved back to Syracuse. Mother went back to work at the pants factory in Tipton.
They never really had much money but Mother was a good manager. They always had a pretty home and nice clothes -- good food -- and still she saved money.
In 1966, after Daddy's death in 1963, Mother moved from Syracuse to make her home with Elmer and me in Jefferson City, Mo. She made the upstairs of our home into a lovely apartment, and lived there until she died of cancer of the lung in July, 1970.
