CHARLETTESVILLE - Walker Lewis Jones, of Charlottesville, died peacefully March 31, 2011. He was 98 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 70 years, Alice Goodwin Jones. Mr. Jones was born in 1912 in Sugar Creek, Mo., to Ashton Blair Jones and Alice Douglas Page Lewis Jones. Walker was the third of four children. His two brothers and sister preceded him in death. Walker Jones graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1936, he was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and DryDock Company, where he worked for more than 30 years. He was involved in the electrical design of such ships as the luxury liner SS United States, the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, and the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. In 1967, Walker became a civilian employee of the Naval Ship Engineering Center, Department of the Navy, where he worked for eight years. Walker married Alice Goodwin Jones on June 29, 1940, at her family home in Hampton, Va. They built a house in Newport News (Warwick) and raised four children there for 26 years; then lived in Falls Church for 10 years; Wolftown for 20 years; and Stanardsville for 10 years. In 2006, they moved to Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville. The family often took camping trips to the mountains. After the children were grown, Walker and Alice continued to travel in their camper, enjoying the beautiful areas of this country and Canada. At home, he loved tinkering with cars and clocks, doing woodworking projects, repairing antiques, and caring for his vegetable gardens and wooded acreage. Left to remember Walker are his daughter, Sarah "Sallie" Carter Jones Rogallo and husband, Robert of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; daughter, Cary Page Jones Carlson and husband, Edward of Salida, Colo.; son, Walker Lewis Jones Jr. and wife, Laurene of Annandale, Va.; son, Ashton Blair Jones III and wife, Erica of Newport News, Va.; grandson, Walker Lewis Jones III and wife, Sarah of Herndon, Va.; grandson William Edward Jones and wife, Brooke of Cameron, N.C.; and eight great-grandchildren, Walker IV, Levi, Benjamin, Dallas, Montanna, Nathan, Haley, and Lily. E.L. Goodwin's Ancestry and History indicates:
- (Pg 15) Hannah Le Baron , born June 5, 1914. She married Mr. _______ Tolman , and is now a widow, and childless ; with small means and without a settled home. She has spent several winters in the South with Father, the last in 1876-7. She writes me fondly of Father's kindness and affection for his "almost twin sister, Mary", and herself when they were little children. At school they were so inseparable that they were known as "the two Mary Goodwins".
