With his brother, William 1591-1672/3, Ozias traveled from Bocking, Essex, England as part of the Braintree Co. on the ship Lyon. Ozias Goodwin was instrumental in organizing the voyage. The Braintree Co. was headed by Rev. Thomas Hooker and the Lyon arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on 16 September 1632 with 350 passengers, including 50 children. Ozias traveled to the New World with his wife, Mary (nee) Woodward and their first child, also named William. William traveled with his wife, Elizabeth White, and their children, Christopher and Elizabeth.

b. about 1591; d. Mar. 11, 1673, Farmington, CT. His name appears on Hartford's Founders Monument. William settled first at Newtown (Cambridge), MA (freeman Nov. 6, 1632; deputy to General Court May 1634), then at Hartford, CT 1636, Hadley, MA 1659, and Farmington, CT about 1670. He was the brother of Osias GOODWIN of Hartford. Elder William married second by Jan. 1669/70 Susan (GARBRAND) HOOKER (d. May 17, 1676, Farmington, CT), widow of Rev. Thomas HOOKER. Ozias Goodwin- The immigrant was born in 1596 in England. He married Mary Woodard, daughter of Robert Woodard of Braintree in the county of Essex. He sailed along with his brother, William from London on the ship, "Lion", on June 22 1632 and arrived in Boston on Sept. 16 of that same year. Ozias is the head of the Connecticut family. He became a citizen of Hartford in 1639 or before. Records in the Conn. State Library prove this. Ozias died before April 1681.

His daughter Betsy recounts:
"My father was born in Winchester in March 1920 and shortly thereafter went to China with Granny and Grandaddy. I always assumed that the whole family was together. The interesting part on this was that Daddy had a Chinese nurse/s who helped to raise him and taught him to speak Chinese on the side. The story goes that when they had to return to the US, he was so distraught at losing his nurse and their Chinese conversations, that he did not speak again for some time."

My father was four years ahead of her and had gone toEpiscopal. My mother and father did not cross paths until later when they wereboth at UVA (the war interceded and so they were at Virginia at the same time)and were introduced by a mutual friend.

Conversation with his sister, Maria Lee Goodwin Firth, on 9/25/07 confirmed Marshall's death in Palm Springs, CA

Maria Lee further recounted that Marshall had 1 year at William and Mary before entering WW2. Upon returning from WW2, he went to UVa but found the academic life not to his liking. He went to Washington DC where he met and married Irene Torguson (sp-?), a teacher. They moved out to Palm Springs CA where Marshall took employment with Irene's father (Harold) in Palm Springs. While there he completed his degree at Riverside College, Palm Springs, CA.

Marshall and Irene had four daughters, all of whom are teachers.

----------------------------------
John J. Gravatt (1853-1925). Your great-grandfather had a remarkably stable career. His ordained ministry commenced at St. John's, Hampton in1876, and continued until his 1893 resignation to take the rectorship of Moore Memorial Church, Richmond. At that time, the congregation of Moore Memorial was also completing their church building. In conjunction with the building project, they voted on 12 February 1894 to rename their church Holy Trinity. Your grandfather remained at that parish until his death in 1925. In June 1924, however, Holy Trinity and Grace Church, Richmond, merged to form Grace and Holy Trinity. The consolidated church would reside at the Holy Trinity facility and Grace Church was abandoned. "For the first year of the consolidation, Dr. Burkhardt [rector of Grace] and Dr. Gravatt [rector of Holy Trinity] would serve as associate rectors 'with equal powers and authority;' at the end of that time Dr. Gravatt, who had already tendered his resignation, would become 'rector emeritus,' and Dr. Burkhardt would assume the title and duties of rector." (William H. Gaines, Jr., A History of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1858-1987, Richmond: Grace and Holy Trinity, n.d., p. 27.) Your great-grandfather did not live to assume his title of rector emeritus, as he died 14 March 1925. Following is a transcription of his obituary in the Virginia Churchman, April 1925, p. 474.: Death of the Rev. John J. Gravatt, D.D. "The Rev. John J. Gravatt, D.D., Associate Rector of Grace and Holy Trinity Church, in Richmond, died suddenly, after a very short illness, on Saturday March 14, age seventy-one years. Dr. Gravett was born in Port Royal, Virginia, in 1853, and graduated at the Virginia Seminary in 1876. He was sent as a deacon to the charge of St. John's Church, Hampton, Virginia, and held the rectorship of that church for over fifteen years. He gave up that charge to assume the rectorship of Holy Trinity Church, In Richmond, which, under his leadership, grew to be one of the largest and strongest congregations in the city. Within the past year Holy Trinity and Grace Churches combined under the name of "Grace and Holy Trinity" with Dr. Gravatt and Rev. W.H. Burkhardt, D.D., as association rectors. Dr. Gravatt has occupied a leading position in the Diocese of Virginia, being for many years a member of the Executive Committee of the Diocese Missionary Society and of the Standing Committee of the Diocese. He was a Deputy from the Diocese of Virginia to the General Convention almost continuously from 1904 to 1919. He was an outstanding figure of the religious life of the community and was widely known and loved as a strong preacher and devoted pastor. Hew as a leader in matters of community welfare and rendered signal service to the city in that respect. Dr. Gravatt was a brother of the Rt. Rev. Wm. L. Gravatt, D.D., the Bishop of West Virginia, and leaves a son, the Rev. John J. Gravatt, Jr., the rector of Trinity Church, Staunton, Virginia; and a daughter, the wife of the Rev. Robert A. Goodwin, Executive Secretary of the Diocese of Southern Virginia. His funeral was held at Grace and Holy Trinity Church, Richmond, on March 16, conducted by the Bishop of the Diocese and the Rev. Drs. W.H. Burkhardt and J.F. Ribble. All of the clergy of the city were vested and acted as honorary pall-bearers. The interment was in Hampton beside his wife, who died many years ago." I have found no evidence that J.J. Gravatt returned to minister at St. John's after 1893. I suspect that they their picture of him from later life is a statement of availability, not a representation of a later ministry. In my experience, churches display the images of nineteenth century rectors that they have been able to acquire, regardless of whether the image was from the time the rector served that particular parish.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr. Goodwin, I am writing in response to your inquiry regarding the 1886 cure of the Rev. John James Gravatt. In 1886 the Rev. Mr. Gravatt was rector of St. John's Church, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, Virginia. Upon graduation from VTS and ordination to the diaconate 06/23/1876, the Rev. Mr. Gravatt became minister-in-charge of that parish (Southern Churchman, 06/29/1876, 2:5. "Parochial Report: Elizabeth City County," Journal of the Eighty-Second Annual Council of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Virginia,...May, 1877, 152-53.) He became rector of the parish after his ordination to the priesthood 06/29/1877 ("Bishop Whittle's Report," Journal...Virginia...May, 1878, 44-45.). His ministry in that parish continued until his resignation in 1893, which was announced in the Southern Churchman, 08/03/1893, 4:5 as follows (quoted in full): "Rev. J.J. Gravatt, rector of St. John's church, Hampton, has tendered his resignation in order to accept the call to the Moore Memorial, in Richmond. His letter of resignation was placed in the hands of Mr. Jacob Heffelfinger and was laid before the vestry at a called meeting Tuesday, August 1st. It is to take effect September 26th, which will end his eventeenth year of service there. The reason influencing his action are not given, but severing his connection with the church there seem to deeply effect him. The whole community will regret to lose him." This announcement implies that the Rev. Mr. Gravatt commenced his ministry at St. John's on 09/26/1876. The sources available at the Bishop Payne Library do not allow me to confirm that specific date for the beginning ofhis ministry at St. John's. If you desire a confirmation of that date, I suggest either consulting the 1806-1883 St. John's Vestry Book, photostat available in the Archives Division of the Library of Virginia (800 E. Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219-8000), or by contacting St. John's Church directly (100 West Queens Way, Hampton, VA 23669 (757)722-2567, stjohns-hampton@juno.com <> ). I hope this information meets you needs. If you have any questions regarding the details provided above or desire additional information concerning the Rev. Mr. Gravatt or related topics, please contact me at your convenience. Sincerely yours, Julia E. Do you have records that would indicate what church Rev. Gravatt was assigned to in this time frame and what the duration of this assignment was? The Rev. Dr E. Allen Coffey, Registrar, The Diocese of Virginia, suggested I contact you and that you might be able track down via a Journal of Councilof that time, or a clerical directory, where John James Gravatt served in Sept 1886. John James Gravatt, 1939-1953; Consecrated May 5, 1939, Trinity Church, Columbia
Bishop Gravatt entered office just as war was breaking out in Europe, and the first third of his episcopacy was concerned with war-related problems. Many clergy, serving in the Armed Forces as chaplains, were absent from their parishes. Across the Diocese, there was an outpouring of support for the young men training at military posts in the Diocese.
Continuing his predecessor's youth-oriented ministry, Bishop Gravatt launched and funded active programs at eight colleges, and a hired a youth worker for the Diocese. In 1946, Convention finally took action to incorporate black communicants into full participation in Diocesan life. Bishop Gravatt began to organize laymen from parishes into study groups, Kanuga conferences and successful combined meetings, as the women had always done.
Bishop's men were elected from each parish as liaisons to the Diocesan organization. With special urging from the young people, Bishop Gravatt and others had been on the lookout for a suitable location for a Diocesan camp. In 1947, Mr. St. Julian Cullum offered to the Diocese 100 acres of his farm near Batesburg which contained a fifteen-acre spring-fed lake. This site was accepted. Francis Marion Weston left funds for a school for girls to be established. After winning a court decision to allow boys also, Heathwood Hall was chartered and adopted at Convention in 1950 as a Diocesan institution. When Bishop Gravatt retired in 1953, there were twenty-five parishes, thirty-three missions, and 13,220 baptized members. A tribute to him in the Diocesan Journal said, "Few men have attained such holiness of life, such abounding courtesy and goodness of heart, as did Bishop Gravatt. He was an accessible Bishop, forgiving, and with an eagerness to love his neighbor, and indeed, all of God's children. He came to the Diocese in a time of financial depression and poverty of resources, nevertheless, he applied vigor and faith to the task before him. The might and spirit of the Right Reverend John J. Gravatt, D.D., shall remain forever in the Diocese in Camp Gravatt as a living memorial to the hard work, enthusiasm, gentle kindness, and spiritual depth of our Bishop."

1098 The Timberlake Manor website reports that Dr. Gravatt received his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania. Timberlake manor is where Dr. Gravatt was raised and where he lived his adult life with his practice in the adjacent lot (#17). His medical office was moved to the Town Green in 2001.

Dr. Gravatt was the first mayor of Port Royal after the Civil War, in 1875, and a vestryman of St. Peter's Church in town for 31 years. Gravatt (relative); Mrs. Rueben Gravatt; and Charles Maurice Smith, attorney (relative of Mrs. J. J. Gravatt). As the Gravatt family increased, so likewise did the size of the house.

The five Gravatt children were:
1. Mary Cary Ambler Gravatt (1845 - 1929), unmarried
2. Lucy Jacquelin Gravatt (1846-1906) married Gen. Rees Tate Bowen, had two children: John Bravatt Bowen (1877-1877) and Mary Cary Bowen married George Turner of Walsingham, King George County, having children: Jacquelin Fitzhugh Turner living in Marion, VA; Augustine Bowen Turner; and Rees Bowen Turner (1904-1944)
3. Charles Urquhart Gravatt, M.D. (1849-1922) married Florence Marshall (1865-1917) of Erie, Pa. and had one child Charles Marshall Gravatt who died as a mining geologist at Asheville, N.C.
4. John James Gravatt II (1854-1925) became an ordained minister of the Episcopal Church, and married India Wray Jones, having three children: C.U. Gravatt (1880-1880); John James Gravatt III (1881-1965) became Bishop of Upper South Caroline in 1939; Emily Gravatt (born 1886)
5. William Loyall Gravatt (1857-1942) married Sidney Peyton, and in 1899 became Bishop of West Virginia; at their deaths in 1942, Bishop and Mrs. W. L. Gravatt were survived by four children: Thomas Peyton Gravatt; William Loyall Gravatt, Jr. Anne Cary Gravatt; Mary Elizabeth Gravatt.

The Gravatt families maintained a residence in Port Royal for 115 years.
