I always assumed that the whole family was together. The interesting part on this was that Daddy had a Chinese nurse/s who helped to raise him and taught him to speak Chinese on the side. The story goes that when they had to return to the US, he was so distraught at losing his nurse and their Chinese conversations, that he did not speak again for some time." --------------------------------- | Goodwin, John Gravatt (I27)

1090 | Stowe's Clerical Directory, 1920-21 - 814 W. Grace St, Richmond - R. Ch. Ho. Trin., Richmond, Va, 1893 - (Rector Church Holy Trinity, Richmond, VA - ?) -b. Port Royal, VA, 5/14/1853 (conflicts with gravestone which says 5/14/1854) - VTS, 1876, D-1876, P-1877 ---------------------------------- John J. Gravatt (1853-1925). Your great-grandfather had a remarkablystable career. His ordained ministry commenced at St. John's, Hampton in1876, and continued until his 1893 resignation to take the rectorship ofMoore Memorial Church, Richmond. At that time, the congregation of MooreMemorial was also completing their church building. In conjunction with thebuilding project, they voted on 12 February 1894 to rename their church HolyTrinity. Your grandfather remained at that parish until his death in 1925.In June 1924, however, Holy Trinity and Grace Church, Richmond, merged toform Grace and Holy Trinity. The consolidated church would reside at theHoly Trinity facility and Grace Church was abandoned. "For the first yearof the consolidation, Dr. Burkhardt [rector of Grace] and Dr. Gravatt[rector of Holy Trinity] would serve as associate rectors 'with equal powersand authority;' at the end of that time Dr. Gravatt, who had alreadytendered his resignation, would become 'rector emeritus,' and Dr. Burkhardtwould assume the title and duties of rector." (William H. Gaines, Jr., AHistory of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1858-1987, Richmond:Grace and Holy Trinity, n.d., p. 27.) Your great-grandfather did not liveto assume his title of rector emeritus, as he died 14 March 1925. Followingis a transcription of his obituary in the Virginia Churchman, April 1925, p.474.:Death of the Rev. John J. Gravatt, D.D."The Rev. John J. Gravatt, D.D., Associate Rector of Grace and HolyTrinity Church, in Richmond, died suddenly, after a very short illness, onSaturday March 14, age seventy-one years.Dr. Gravett was born in Port Royal, Virginia, in 1853, and graduated atthe Virginia Seminary in 1876. He was sent as a deacon to the charge of St.John's Church, Hampton, Virginia, and held the rectorship of that church forover fifteen years. He gave up that charge to assume the rectorship of HolyTrinity Church, In Richmond, which, under his leadership, grew to be one ofthe largest and strongest congregations in the city. Within the past yearHoly Trinity and Grace Churches combined under the name of "Grace and HolyTrinity" with Dr. Gravatt and Rev. W.H. Burkhardt, D.D., as associationrectors.Dr. Gravatt has occupied a leading position in the Diocese of Virginia, being for many years a member of the Executive Committee of the DioceseMissionary Society and of the Standing Committee of the Diocese. He was aDeputy from the Diocese of Virginia to the General Convention almostcontinuously from 1904 to 1919.He was an outstanding figure of the religious life of the community andwas widely known and loved as a strong preacher and devoted pastor. Hew asa leader in matters of community welfare and rendered signal service to thecity in that respect.Dr. Gravatt was a brother of the Rt. Rev. Wm. L. Gravatt, D.D., theBishop of West Virginia, and leaves a son, the Rev. John J. Gravatt, Jr.,the rector of Trinity Church, Staunton, Virginia; and a daughter, the wifeof the Rev. Robert A. Goodwin, Executive Secretary of the Diocese ofSouthern Virginia. His funeral was held at Grace and Holy Trinity Church, Richmond, onMarch 16, conducted by the Bishop of the Diocese and the Rev. Drs. W.H.Burkhardt and J.F. Ribble. All of the clergy of the city were vested andacted as honorary pall-bearers. The interment was in Hampton beside hiswife, who died many years ago."I have found no evidence that J.J. Gravatt returned to minister at St.John's after 1893. I suspect that they their picture of him from later lifeis a statement of availability, not a representation of a later ministry. In my experience, churches display the images of nineteenth century rectorsthat they have been able to acquire, regardless of whether the image wasfrom the time the rector served that particular parish. -------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Mr. Goodwin,I am writing in response to your inquiry regarding the 1886 cure of the Rev.John James Gravatt. In 1886 the Rev. Mr. Gravatt was rector of St. John'sChurch, Elizabeth City Parish, Hampton, Virginia. Upon graduation from VTSand ordination to the diaconate 06/23/1876, the Rev. Mr. Gravatt becameminister-in-charge of that parish (Southern Churchman, 06/29/1876, 2:5."Parochial Report: Elizabeth City County," Journal of the Eighty-SecondAnnual Council of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Virginia,...May, 1877,152-53.) He became rector of the parish after his ordination to thepriesthood 06/29/1877 ("Bishop Whittle's Report," Journal...Virginia...May,1878, 44-45.). His ministry in that parish continued until his resignationin 1893, which was announced in the Southern Churchman, 08/03/1893, 4:5 asfollows (quoted in full):"Rev. J.J. Gravatt, rector of St. John's church, Hampton, has tenderedhis resignation in order to accept the call to the Moore Memorial, inRichmond. His letter of resignation was placed in the hands of Mr. JacobHeffelfinger and was laid before the vestry at a called meeting Tuesday,August 1st. It is to take effect September 26th, which will end hiseventeenth year of service there. The reason influencing his action are notgiven, but severing his connection with the church there seem to deeplyeffect him. The whole community will regret to lose him."This announcement implies that the Rev. Mr. Gravatt commenced his ministryat St. John's on 09/26/1876. Many clergy, serving in the Armed Forces as chaplains, were absent from their parishes. Across the Diocese, there was an outpouring of support for the young men training at military posts in the Diocese. Continuing his predecessor's youth-oriented ministry, Bishop Gravatt launched and funded active programs at eight colleges, and a hired a youth worker for the Diocese. In 1946, Convention finally took action to incorporate black communicants into full participation in Diocesan life. Bishop Gravatt began to organize laymen from parishes into study groups, Kanuga conferences and successful combined meetings, as the women had always done. Bishop's men were elected from each parish as liaisons to the Diocesan organization. With special urging from the young people, Bishop Gravatt and others had been on the lookout for a suitable location for a Diocesan camp. In 1947, Mr. St. Julian Cullum offered to the Diocese 100 acres of his farm near Batesburg which contained a fifteen-acre spring-fed lake. This site was accepted. Francis Marion Weston left funds for a school for girls to be established. After winning a court decision to allow boys also, Heathwood Hall was chartered and adopted at Convention in 1950 as a Diocesan institution. When Bishop Gravatt retired in 1953, there were twenty-five parishes, thirty-three missions, and 13,220 baptized members. A tribute to him in the Diocesan Journal said, "Few men have attained such holiness of life, such abounding courtesy and goodness of heart, as did Bishop Gravatt. He was an accessible Bishop, forgiving, and with an eagerness to love his neighbor, and indeed, all of God's children. He came to the Diocese in a time of financial depression and poverty of resources, nevertheless, he applied vigor and faith to the task before him. The might and spirit of the Right Reverend John J. Gravatt, D.D., shall remain forever in the Diocese in Camp Gravatt as a living memorial to the hard work, enthusiasm, gentle kindness, and spiritual depth of our Bishop." -------------------------- Reported by Watt family 6/1/2008: Dr. McClung and Nancy Wayland were married by Rev.
